![]() ![]() ![]() Yet, gambling can only provide such a medium when the games played are mutually intelligible. ![]() Gambling, especially for high stakes, is most acceptable with some degree of social and kinship distance and often took place between members of different communities who possessed ambiguous relationship prospects. Artifacts used in ethnographically and historically attested gambling games are conspicuously well represented, offering insights into social interactions both within and beyond the resident groups themselves. Our ongoing investigations at Promontory Caves 1 and 2 (Great Salt Lake, Utah) explore the suspicion that these AD 13th century assemblages were created by migrating ancestral Apacheans. ![]()
